How can I tell if I have a mold problem?
Seeing a large amount of growth somewhere in your home or structure is an obvious indicator of a mold problem. A musty or foul odor can also be an indication of mold growth. In some cases, homeowners or occupants of a building discover mold through physical reactions of the body, such as sneezing, irritated eyes, and runny nose. More extreme symptoms include asthma attacks for those with asthma (or allergies to mold) and skin rash (dermatitis). If you are suspecting mold growth because of physical responses to its presence, you can learn more by visiting this Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) resource: www.epa.gov/mold/how-do-molds-affect-people

Mold is naturally occurring everywhere
There is mold present in every environment, indoors or outdoors. Mold’s primary goal is to break down dead organic matter outside, but it generally becomes an indoor problem when moisture is not controlled properly. Some of the most common reasons for indoor mold in Colorado are going to be water losses, leaks, or flooding—which unexpectedly introduce large amounts of moisture into an environment very quickly.
Mold only needs 24-48 hours to begin growing. Because mold is ubiquitous, it cannot be 100% removed from any environment. However, it needs to be addressed in a timely way so that it doesn’t get out of control and cause major damage to a home or structure, its occupants and their contents.
How do I reduce moisture or humidity in my home or business?
The first part of the process will be to understand what is allowing a high level of moisture to be present and addressing that immediately. If moisture is at high levels in your environment, it doesn’t take much for mold to start colonizing again in other areas. Its best to setup containment areas where mold is located to stop it from spreading.
For example: when moisture is resulting from water damage, you will want to start by extracting any standing water and then finding out where excess moisture is located with FLIR instruments that can locate water damage—even if its behind walls or in ceilings and crawlspaces. Once you understand where all the moisture is located, flood cuts may be required to ensure all affected building materials can be addressed. You will then need to perform a full dry out with high-capacity equipment, such as professional grade air movers, dehumidifiers, and air scrubbers. In serious cases, you may need to replace heavily saturated insulation and building materials as well.
A moisture meter will help determine drying progress on parts of the structure’s moisture over time. On average, dry outs can take about three days, but in extreme cases up to ten days or more. Setting up equipment improperly or turning them off at any point of the process will also extend the dry out period. You can rent the drying equipment, but the cost will add up on a large scope project. It can also be expensive if you are not sure how to implement the equipment in the affected spaces. The scope of this production depends on the scope of damages, if multiple rooms or units are affected, etc.
Every mold or moisture situation is completely different, which is why it’s highly recommended that a professional assess the environment for an accurate understanding of how its being affected.
How can I get rid of mold?
Don’t forget that areas were mold presence is confirmed need to be contained to avoid cross-contaminating unaffected areas. Heavily affected building materials and contents may need to be discarded, demolished, and replaced.
All salvageable surfaces, building material, and contents (such as couches, furniture, synthetic fabrics, carpets, etc.) need to be completely dry and then deep cleaned. If any contents are heavily affected by mold or odor, you should weigh the cost of cleaning versus the cost of replacement.
You should at least suspect that the HVAC system will need treatment as well. By not addressing a centralized heating or air system, you could be potentially spreading around more mold. You can learn more about cleaning air ducts here: www.epa.gov/indoor-air-quality-iaq/should-you-have-air-ducts-your-home-cleaned
Why hire restoration professionals to handle mold?
The EPA says most people can handle a 3ft. by 3ft. patch of mold on their own, and you can learn more about that here: https://www.epa.gov/mold/mold-cleanup-your-home. When mold issues exceed a 3×3’ area it’s recommended to hire a remediation company.
We use cutting edge technology and proven techniques to create a healthier environment. We will share our knowledge and expertise about these instruments, such as the InstaScope. The team at PURE Environmental is IICRC Certified and follows all industry standards and Colorado’s regulations.
How long does it take to remove mold?
This depends on the scope of mold damage. Pure Restore trained project managers can help give detailed information and timelines on the process.

MOLD REMEDIATION FAQ
Answers to frequently asked questions about mold remediation and removal.
What is the protocol for mold remediation?
Mold is a fungus that can grow indoors or outdoors and thrives in moist, warm environments. To remediate mold, seal off the surrounding areas with plastic and use a negative air pressure containment system to prevent contamination. The negative air pressure containment system will exhaust contaminated air out of the building and prevent dirty air from entering other rooms. It is critical to follow the IICRC standards for mold remediation.
What can I expect from mold remediation?
Mold remediation usually involves spraying and scrubbing surfaces, then disinfecting and encapsulating them. This process can be time-consuming and difficult, so it’s often best to hire a professional mold remediation company. However, with the right knowledge and tools, you can remove mold yourself.
Is mold remediation a hoax?
There are many scams associated with mold remediation. Some companies will use high-pressure tactics to sell unnecessary services, while others will perform shoddy work that does not remove the mold problem. Homeowners should be aware of these scams and take steps to avoid them. When hiring a mold remediation company, make sure to choose a contractor who is experienced and certified in mold remediation. A qualified mold remediation company should be able to confidently answer question regarding the scope of a job and any services being administered.
How much does it cost to remove black mold from a house?
The cost of black mold removal varies depending on the affected area’s size and the contamination’s extent. The cost of black mold removal is between $500 and $4,000. However, in some cases, the cost can be much higher. For example, if black mold has contaminated a large area or if it has caused extensive damage to the house, the cost of removal can be upwards of $10,000.
Should mold be professionally removed?
Most mold problems in the home can be handled by the homeowner. This includes cleaning with a bleach solution, repairing leaky plumbing, and using good ventilation. However, hiring a professional is recommended for bigger issues or areas that are hard to reach. They will be able to identify the source of the problem and make recommendations to prevent future growth. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offers a useful mold cleanup guide online: https://www.epa.gov/mold/mold-cleanup-your-home
Does homeowner's insurance cover mold?
Homeowner insurance policies typically do not cover damage caused by mold growth. However, some policies may cover damage if mold growth is associated with a covered loss, such as a burst pipe. If you are concerned about mold growth in your home, it is important to take steps to prevent it, such as using an air dehumidifier and keeping the humidity level in your home low.
How long does mold cleanup take?
Mold cleanup can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on the extent of the contamination. If you have a small area of mold, you may be able to clean it up with some basic household cleaners. However, if the mold is widespread or growing in a damp or humid area, it’s best to call in a professional mold remediation company. They will have the training and equipment necessary to safely and effectively remove all traces of mold from your home or office.
How do you clean up after mold remediation?
Cleanup after mold remediation is critical in ensuring that the mold does not return. A professional cleanup crew will use commercial-grade cleaning products and equipment to clean the affected areas. When cleaning up mold, wearing protective gear such as a respirator and gloves is important. The cleanup crew will also seal off the work area to prevent the spread of spores. Mold remediation can be tricky, so it is best to leave it to the professionals.
Does mold have to be professionally removed?
While mold can be removed by homeowners, it is generally recommended that professional help be sought to ensure that all the mold is removed and the area is thoroughly cleaned. This is especially important in cases of severe or widespread mold growth. Professional remediation companies will have the proper equipment and experience to safely remove mold and restore the area to its original condition.
What do you throw away after mold remediation?
After mold remediation, you will need to throw away any paper products, books, or food contaminated by mold. This can be difficult to do if you have sentimental attachments to these items, but it is necessary to prevent the spread of mold and protect your health. You should also consider discarding any porous materials, such as carpeting or drywall, that have been affected by mold. While it is possible to clean these items, they are also more likely to become re-infested with mold unless special care is taken. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide what you are comfortable keeping and what you need to get rid of to protect yourself and your home.
Can you live in a house after mold remediation?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the health effects of mold exposure can vary depending on the type of mold, the extent of exposure, and a person’s underlying health conditions. However, it is generally recommended that people exposed to mold leave their homes until the mold has been completely removed and the home has been properly cleaned and dried. If you choose not to leave your home after mold remediation, it is important to be aware that some molds can still pose a health risk even if they are no longer visible. Therefore, it is important to keep areas where mold may have been present clean and dry.
Does mold come back after remediation?
Remediating mold growth effectively requires addressing the source of moisture that led to mold growth in the first place. That could be a leaky pipe, excess humidity, or any number of other potential sources of moisture. If the source of moisture isn’t fixed, then it’s likely that mold will come back after remediation.
What do you throw away after mold remediation?
Any visible mold should be removed and discarded. This includes mold on drywall, wood, carpeting, and furniture. Any food that has come into contact with mold should be thrown away. This includes food in open containers and food that was not in a sealed container to start with. If an appliance has been in contact with high levels of mold, it may need to be replaced. This includes refrigerators, freezers, ovens, stovetops, dishwashers, and washing machines.
How long does it take to remove mold professionally?
It varies, but it can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. Mold remediation professionals use various techniques to remove mold. The time it takes to complete the job will depend on the severity of the infestation, the types of surfaces being treated, and the specific methodologies being used. Generally speaking, most jobs will take at least a few days, and some may take up to two weeks or more.
