In Colorado, we often hear the stories of homes being caught up in wildfires in the mountainous areas, or the occasional lightning strike out on the plains.
While there is little you can do to prevent these types of house fires, there are things you can do to plan ahead for them, and make sure you can quickly recover your loss, and get back to your normal lifestyle.
Protecting your home from fire damage
Think about applying various layers of protection. Always have smoke detectors on every floor of the house. Also place them in all sleeping areas. If possible, you may also want to consider home sprinkler systems. They aren’t cheap, but can provide a substantial increase in safety, especially in homes where young children or senior citizens live and may have more trouble getting out of a burning space.
Clean up any dry vegetation, plants, or branches that are near your property. These serve as additional fuel for wildfires and should be removed at all costs.
Review your home insurance policies before you face disaster. Many people find out they are insured inadequately too late. While we can all hope we never face a fire disaster, it’s nice to know you are fully covered in case it ever happens.
Work out a safety plan. As a family, map out your safety plan. Talk about how you will escape the home in case of a fire, and where you’ll meet once you are safely outside. Practice the drill, and talk about different scenarios.
Purchase safety products. If your sleeping areas are on the second floor, invest in ladders or other methods for getting safely out of the window and onto the street level. Make sure your fire extinguishers are up to date and working. Check all safety devices, including fire and smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors.
