As we begin to age, safety becomes a bigger concern for overall well-being. Even a simple fall can have detrimental impact on the way we live from that time forward.
In order for seniors to remain within their homes, the first place to begin work is with a bath safety remodel. Here are 7 tips to get you started.
- Widen the doorway. Standard doorways are too small for some wheelchairs, or for an assistant to help someone in and out of the bathroom. Simply adding a few inches can create a much safer atmosphere.
 - Add more space. Many home bathrooms are tiny, and don’t allow much room for movement, or for an extra set of hands. Widen the bathroom, and give more space for mobility.
 - Add safety features. There are many different safety features you can install throughout the bathroom. Grab bars, safety rails, as well as bathing benches and chairs, and non-skid surfaces in the shower and/or tub.
 - Add walk in tubs and roll in showers. The majority of accidents in the bathroom occur in the tub or shower. Walk in and roll in capabilities mean less chance of falling while getting in or out.
 - Install pedestals or hanging sinks. Removing vanities makes it easier to roll up to the water source, and provides more room to move.
 - Adjust the height of toilets. Toilets come in a variety of sizes and heights. Put in a taller one to make it easier to get up and down.
 - Make the shower more accessible. Having a roll in shower is a start. Also include shower benches or chairs, and include a handheld shower.
